The Netiquette

The NETIQUETTE

Netiquette is a portmanteau of the words "internet" and "etiquette". It refers to socially acceptable rules for online communication across platforms like email, forums, social media, and messaging apps. It emphasizes respect, clarity, and responsibility in digital interactions.

Key Rules of Netiquette:

a. Avoid ALL CAPS (perceived as shouting) and excessive emojis.

b. Respect privacy. Don’t share others’ info/posts without consent.

c. Proofread messages to prevent misunderstandings.

d. Stay on-topic in group chats/forums to avoid spam.

e. Acknowledge replies (e.g., “Thanks” or 👍) even if brief.

f. Avoid trolling/flaming. Disagree politely, not aggressively.

Examples of Bad Netiquette:

a. Posting off-topic rants in work chats.

b. Sending unsolicited promotional links.

c. Ghosting messages in collaborative projects.

Consequences of Poor Netiquette:

Damaged reputations, blocked accounts, or even legal issues in extreme cases (e.g., cyberbullying). Good netiquette fosters trust and efficiency in digital spaces.

HERE ARE THE MOST UPDATED NETIQUETTE GUIDELINES SO FAR

Netiquette, the internet etiquette, has evolved with digital trends, but core principles of respect, clarity, and responsibility remain foundational.

The following are the most current guidelines synthesized from recent sources:

1. Respectful Communication -

a. Treat online interactions as face-to-face. Avoid insults, sarcasm, or inflammatory language. Use the same courtesy you would offline.

b. Avoid "shouting". Refrain from typing in ALL CAPS, which is perceived as aggressive or shouting.

c. Respect cultural differences: Be mindful of diverse backgrounds in global online spaces.

2. Privacy & Safety -

a. Protect personal information. Never share passwords, addresses, or sensitive details about yourself or others without consent.

b. Avoid oversharing. Assume anything posted online is permanent, even if deleted. Use privacy settings wisely.

c. Report hate speech or misinformation. Flag harmful content and avoid amplifying unverified claims.

3. Professional & Academic Conduct -

a. For businesses, prioritize timely responses, avoid spam, and tailor content to platform norms (e.g., LinkedIn vs. TikTok).

b. For students, use formal language in academic forums, cite sources, and avoid off-topic posts.

c. For the conduct of meetings, mute when not speaking, use professional backgrounds, and test tech beforehand.

4. Content Sharing & Credibility -

a. Fact-check before sharing. Verify information using tools like Snopes or Grammarly to avoid spreading misinformation.

b. Credit original creators. Always attribute content (photos, quotes, etc.) to avoid plagiarism.

c. Avoid spam and self-promotion. Focus on value-driven posts rather than repetitive ads.

5. Platform-Specific Etiquette -

a. For social media, limit hashtags (e.g., 1 to 3 per post on Instagram), use humor cautiously - avoid offensive or context-dependent jokes .

b. For forums or discussion boards, stay on topic, read existing threads before posting, and use concise language.

Emerging Trends (2023 to 2024):

a. Use AI tools, use grammar checkers (e.g., Grammarly) to refine tone and clarity.

b. Check deepfakes/misinformation, critically evaluate media authenticity before sharing.

c. Global inclusivity. Adapt communication for multicultural audiences and avoid region-specific slang.

Final Tip:

Netiquette isn’t static, so, stay adaptable to new platforms and technologies. When in doubt, prioritize empathy and accountability in all interactions.

The Best Browser For Netflix

Netflix and many other video providers protect content using something called digital rights management (DRM). This, in a nutshell, makes it harder for people to record Netflix on their computer and then upload it to file-sharing services etc.

The different browser makers use different DRM technology. Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox use a software-based DRM system called Widevine. Unlike some other, stronger hardware-based systems, this makes it possible (although not easy) for people to use screen-capture software to record Netflix shows.

This, naturally, doesn’t impress the rights holders, who don’t want their movies or shows ripped off and pirated in super-sharp 4K quality. So, Netflix limits the playback resolution to 720p (1,280 x 720 pixels) for both Chrome and Firefox on Windows, Mac and Linux computers. On Chromebooks, where a slightly different system is used, you can get Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) using Chrome.

So, no matter if you pay Netflix a hefty premium for its Ultra HD streams or if your laptop has a spanking sharp 4K screen, the maximum you’ll ever get watching Netflix on most computers using Chrome or Firefox is blurry old 720p.

What’s the best Netflix browser on Windows?

Both Apple and Microsoft use hardware-based DRM systems, which are harder to crack than the Widevine software. Consequently, Netflix allows users of the Microsoft Edge and Apple Safari browsers to enjoy much better picture quality.

For Windows users, Microsoft Edge is the best browser for Netflix, allowing you to enjoy resolutions of up to 4K. However, there are some provisos. To get the maximum picture quality you must have:

  • A 4K capable display (obviously)
  • Intel’s 7th generation Core CPU or newer
  • Windows 10 version 1607 or newer

The Netflix app from the Windows Store is also capable of 4K playback if your computer meets the above conditions.

Tablet: Huawei MatePad Hands-on

Huawei recently launched its new tablet in the Philippines, the MatePad. It’s the mid-range sibling of the MatePad Pro and sports a 10.4-inch screen, a Kirin 810 chipset, 7,250mAh battery, and support for the Huawei M Pencil. Check out our initial thoughts below.

Huawei sent us a nice package for this unit, which includes the MatePad, Huawei M Pencil, and the MatePad folio cover.

The unit we got comes in Midnight Grey color with an aluminum body. The front houses the 10.4-inch IPS screen with 2000 x 1200 resolution or 224ppi, which is decent. However, you’ll notice that it’s not that sharp, especially if you’re more accustomed to displays with higher resolution.

The bezel also looks thicker compared to the MatePad Pro. It also has a smaller screen-to-body ratio of 81% compared to the Pro’s 86.5%. In landscape mode, we can find the 8MP front camera at the top bezel. In this orientation, up top, is the volume button and quad-microphones so it can easily pick up audio when you’re in a video call or recording audio.

On the left, we have the power/lock button and two loudspeakers. On the right are two more loudspeakers and USB-C port. At the bottom is the card tray for the nano-SIM and microSD card. Flip it on its back, and you will see the Huawei branding, and the protruding camera module for the 8MP shooter, LED flash, and microphone.

The MatePad is a bit chunky at 7.35mm and has a decent heft at 450g, but the rounded frame blends almost seamlessly with the back panel.

We see it as an excellent entertainment device for watching movies, casual music listening, e-book reading, Zoom calls, and note-taking with the Huawei M Pencil. It can also be a productivity companion if you have the keyboard folio.
Powering the MatePad is a Kirin 810 chipset, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, 7,250mAh battery, and EMUI 10.1 based on Android 10. There’s no GMS, so it uses HMS with AppGallery. We’ll discuss more of its performance in our full review.

The Huawei MatePad will be available starting July 31 for PHP 20,990.

Customers who purchase the new MatePad will also get freebies worth PHP 8,171, including:

Huawei 15GB Cloud Storage (1 year)
